A Charge State Breeder Based on a Low Frequency Rfq for the Isac Accelerator Complex

چکیده

The new ISAC-II facility has just been funded. The main goals of this extension to the ISAC facility are: expanding the mass range from A ≤ 30 to A ≤ 150 and increasing the final energy from 1.5 MeV/nucleon to 6.5 MeV/nucleon. The accepted mass to charge ratio for the actual 36 MHz RFQ is A/q ≤ 30/1. In order to increase the mass range to 150 we have to increase the charge-state to at least 5+. This can be achieved by three different methods: i) using a charge state breeder based on an EBIS as developed at REX-ISOLDE [1], ii) using an ECRIS or ECRIT based on an ECR as developed at Grenoble [2, 3], iii) using a gas charge-state stripper based on a low frequency RFQ [4]. Since intense RIB are difficult to produce it is of primary importance to obtain the highest overall charge-state breeding efficiency and to preserve the beam quality, small emittance and beam purity. In comparing the three above methods, our analysis shows that the combination of a low frequency RFQ and a gas stripper offers the best overall performance.

Acceleration of Charge Bred Radioactive Ions at Triumf

Most ion sources at ISOL (isotope separation on-line) facilities can produce only singly charged ions but efficient post acceleration requires high charge states. For light ions this can be achieved by stripping after a first moderate acceleration but with heavy ions this is no longer possible and charge state breeding is necessary. The breeder should be able to work at a high efficiency for th...

Correction of Field Errors in ISAC RFQ

This paper is an abridged version of a TRIUMF design note[1]. The most important effect of using a non-ideal vane geometry is that the longitudinal field can depart substantially from the value calculated from the usual analytic formulae; and this may lead to beam loss due to inadequate acceleration. The effect is enhanced at low particle speed and low radio-frequency, as occurs at injection in...

Isac at Triumf: Recent Achievements and Future Goals

The ISAC facility at TRIUMF is now routinely delivering record intensities of radioactive ions to low energy experiments (E ≤ 60 keV). The post-accelerator for ISAC includes a 35.4 MHz RF Quadrupole (RFQ) and a poststripper, 106.1 MHz variable energy drift tube linac (DTL) to accelerate ions to a final energy from 0.15 to 1.5 MeV/u. The RFQ has been fully commissioned and the DTL is being insta...

Initial Commissioning of the Isac Rib Facility

Construction began in 1995 on ISAC, a radioactive ion beam (RIB) and accelerator facility at TRIUMF that utilises the ISOL (on-line isotope separation) production method. ISAC includes: a new building, a beam line with adequate shielding to transport up to 100 uA of 500 MeV protons to two target/ion-source stations, remote handling facilities for the targets, a high-resolution mass-separator, l...

تطبیق پذیری باریکه -H در قسمت انرژی پایین و متوسط ماشین Linac4 در سرن

Linac4 is the near future 160 MeV H- linear accelerator of the CERN presently under construction. It will replace the present Linac2 as injector of the proton accelerator complex in CERN. The Linac4 is composed of a 45 keV ion source, a Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT), a 352.2 MHz Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ), which accelerates the beam to 3 MeV, and a Medium Energy Beam Transport (MEBT), ...
